FTL or LTL, when to use full loads and when groupage

When a full load (FTL) pays off and when groupage (LTL) does, comparing cost, time and handling risk.

Choose FTL (full load) when you have a lot of goods, need speed and want to avoid handling. LTL (groupage) pays off for smaller volumes, you pay for the space you need, at the cost of longer transit and consolidation. The line does not run along the number of pallets: what decides is the deadline, the value of the goods and what handling risk costs you.

Frequently asked questions

Why does LTL groupage take longer than a full load?
In LTL the goods of many senders are consolidated on one trailer, so the route includes more loading and unloading points and sometimes handling at a terminal. FTL runs directly from sender to receiver. Hence the difference: LTL is cheaper for small volumes but needs a longer transit time and more careful date planning.
Is the risk of damage higher with groupage?
Risk grows wherever the goods are handled. LTL adds consolidation and possible transshipment, meaning extra operations on the pallet. In FTL the trailer runs from loading to unloading untouched. That does not make groupage unsafe, but sensitive goods need proper packing and securing on the pallet for it.
Can ADR dangerous goods be shipped both as FTL and as LTL?
Yes, OTSL runs ADR carriage in both models. Dangerous goods require correct classification, documentation and marking under the ADR agreement, and on groupage additionally a check whether the given classes may be combined with other cargo on one trailer. These conditions are settled at quotation stage, before loading.
