Transport to Portugal is the longest standard road route inside the EU: from Poland through Germany, France and Spain, usually around three thousand kilometres depending on the loading and unloading points. Over such a distance the delivery date is decided not by the speed of the truck but by driver working time limits. The whole route runs on EU roads, with no customs clearance.
A route through three transit countries
The classic run goes from Poland along German motorways, then through France and under the Pyrenees, then across Spain to Lisbon or Porto. In numbers: the Warsaw-Lisbon leg alone measures about 3300 to 3400 km by road. Toll systems change along the way: from electronically charged road tolls to sections paid at gates. These costs are significant and must sit in the quote from the start, because over three thousand kilometres a small oversight multiplies into serious money.
Driver working time: the real clock of this route
EU driving time rules cap daily and weekly driving and enforce regular rests: Regulation (EC) No 561/2006 allows 9 hours of driving a day, and 10 hours only twice a week. In practice a single-crewed truck realistically needs 4 to 5 days of driving for transport to Portugal, and the route only speeds up with a double crew, where drivers swap behind the wheel and the truck almost never stands. Promising a date without counting the breaks is not optimism, it is a future claim, which is why we build this schedule from the driver's clock, not from the receiver's wish.
Part load or dedicated truck
- Dedicated truck: the shortest possible time and full control over the route. Makes sense for full trailers and urgent goods.
- Part load: a few pallets share the cost of the long route with other shippers within our groupage services. Lead time is longer because the route links several points, but the price per pallet still makes sense even over this distance.
- Regular shipments: for repeatable volumes a fixed line pays off, with departure dates known in advance.

On a short route a planning error costs hours. On the route to Portugal it costs days: a miscalculated weekend rest or a driving ban in a transit country can shift the delivery more than any traffic jam.
