Export to the UK, required documents

The list of documents needed to export goods from Poland to the UK after Brexit and who prepares them.

To export to the United Kingdom you usually need: a commercial invoice, an export declaration (EX/EAD), an ENS safety declaration, GB import documents and, where preferences apply, a statement on origin on the invoice (with REX registration above EUR 6,000). The scope depends on the goods and procedure.

Who prepares the EX/EAD export declaration?

The export declaration is lodged by a customs agency acting for the exporter. At OTSL we do it as part of the transport: we prepare the export documents and the GMR based on the commercial invoice and goods specification from the client. The client answers for the accuracy of the goods data, and the agency for the correct lodging in the customs system.

Is proof of origin always required for exports to the UK?

No. Proof of origin is prepared only when the goods have preferential origin and the importer wants to use reduced duty rates. In trade with the UK it takes the form of a statement on origin on the invoice; for consignments above EUR 6,000 the exporter needs REX registration. For goods without preferences an invoice, the EX/EAD export declaration, ENS and GB import documents are enough.

How do EU export documents differ from GB import documents?

Export documents such as the EX/EAD close the procedure on the EU side and confirm that the goods legally left its customs territory. GB import documents open the procedure on the British side and are the basis for creating the GMR for the crossing. One shipment needs both sets, prepared before the truck sets off.
