Spain is one of the longest road runs from Poland in the EU, often more than two thousand kilometres. So the price depends first on distance and driver hours, and only then on transit tolls and trailer type. Spain itself has scrapped most motorway charges, but the road there runs through tolled France.
Why distance drives the price
Catalonia and Madrid are a shorter drive than Andalusia, Galicia or the Portuguese border, where extra hundreds of kilometres add up. On such a long run, driver hours become decisive: a single driver must take breaks and rest periods, so the trip itself lasts several days. Tolls: tolled France, cheaper Spain
Most of the road-charge cost on this lane arises in transit, especially in France, where motorways are charged by section. Spain itself has scrapped tolls on many roads in recent years, including much of the coastal AP-7, and further northern sections are being freed.
Spain now has few tolled motorways compared with its neighbours: after charges were dropped across part of the network, they remain only on selected routes, mainly in the north (toll and vignette information: administracion.gob.es). France, by contrast, charges for every motorway section used (source: autoroutes.fr).
Reefers and temperature-sensitive goods
The Spanish lane often carries sensitive cargo: fruit, vegetables, but also cosmetics or products that must not overheat in summer. A reefer trailer costs more than a plain curtain-sider, because it adds fuel for the cooling unit and keeping the cold chain over the whole long run. How long does delivery to Spain take?
Over such a distance transit is measured in days, not hours, and varies widely between north-east Spain and the south. The date is set by the driver crew, mandatory breaks, any queues crossing the Pyrenees, and whether we move a full truck or a groupage load. When does this rule not apply?
This rule does not apply when transport is carried out by sea using ferry connections or in the case of cargo with special temperature requirements.
