Transport to the Isle of Man: customs and the crossing

The Isle of Man is in a customs and VAT union with the UK but outside the EU. We explain how transport from Poland works, where clearance arises and which crossing the goods take.

The Isle of Man is a Crown Dependency that remains in a customs and tax (VAT) union with the United Kingdom but outside the European Union. In practice this means that goods from Poland clear customs just as for export to Great Britain, while the leg between Great Britain and the island is treated as internal UK carriage. The transport ends with a ferry crossing to Douglas. OTSL arranges the whole chain: road, customs and the ferry booking.

The Isle of Man, the UK and the EU: a shared customs and VAT area with Great Britain means there is no customs border for goods between the UK and the island. Towards the European Union, however, the island is a third country, so a consignment from Poland crosses a customs border just as for a delivery to Great Britain.

How the route from Poland looks

The goods travel by road across the continent to one of the British ports, clear customs on entry to Great Britain and then head for the ferry port. Sailings to the Isle of Man run among others from Heysham and Liverpool to the island capital, Douglas. Because the formalities arise at the British border, the same documents apply as for ordinary export to the islands, described in the text on export documents to the UK.

What to keep in mind

  • The crossing booking: the number of sailings to the island is limited, so we plan the ferry date well ahead, as with other crossings to the UK.
  • One set of clearance: clearance concerns entry to Great Britain; from there the goods travel on with no further customs border.
  • Delivery time: the standard run to the islands is joined by the wait for a sailing, which is worth allowing for when planning, as in the guide on how long transport to the UK takes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Isle of Man in the European Union?
No. The Isle of Man is a Crown Dependency outside the European Union but in a customs and VAT union with the United Kingdom. That is why goods from Poland clear customs just as for export to Great Britain, while the leg between the UK and the island is treated as internal carriage, ending with a ferry crossing to Douglas.
Where do ferries to the Isle of Man sail from?
Sailings to the Isle of Man run among others from Heysham and Liverpool to Douglas, the island capital. The number of connections is limited, so we plan the crossing date in advance and set it into the schedule of the whole delivery, together with the clearance on entry to Great Britain.
Is clearance needed from Poland to the Isle of Man?
Yes. Towards the European Union the island is a third country, so a consignment from Poland crosses a customs border on entry to Great Britain, just as for an ordinary delivery to the islands. After that clearance the goods travel on to the Isle of Man with no further customs border, because the island shares a customs area with the UK.
