Slovakia as an automotive market
For such a small country, car output is unusually high. Four large car plants run here, in Bratislava, Trnava, Žilina and Nitra, surrounded by a dense network of component suppliers. This market lives to the rhythm of the production lines, so transport has to hit set windows, not arrive at some point during the day.
Production scale: in 2024 Slovakia built around 993,000 cars and stayed the world's largest car producer per capita (source: ZAP SR, the Automotive Industry Association). For a forwarder that means a steady stream of just-in-time deliveries, where punctuality to the hour matters as much as price.
Slots, booking and JIT/JIS risk
Car plants run on just-in-time (JIT) and just-in-sequence (JIS) deliveries, where material has to arrive exactly when the line needs it, in the set order. Every delivery has a booking and an assigned time slot. Missing the window means, at best, the next free slot hours later, at worst a contractual penalty or, if a part runs out, a line stoppage. Transit time and what drives cost
Slovakia borders Poland and Žilina sits just across the border, so transit times are short. From southern Poland a full truck usually arrives within one working day, a little longer to Bratislava in the west. Cost depends on distance, trailer type, the return direction and whether it is a full truck or a part load. The toll is added on top.
The Slovak toll covers vehicles over 3.5 tonnes on motorways, expressways and selected national roads, about 2,400 kilometres of network in total. An on-board unit charges by axles, weight and emission class. From 1 July 2025, following the EU Eurovignette directive, five CO2 emission classes were added, which affect the rate (source: emyto.sk).
Documents and customs
Slovakia is in the European Union, so moving Union goods needs no customs clearance and no customs checks at the border. A CMR note, an invoice or delivery note and a packing list if needed are enough. There is no duty or import VAT, and it is settled as an intra-Community supply. In automotive you add the paperwork for the returnable packaging loop, for example KLT boxes and Gitterboxes settled in a pool with the consignee.
