GVMS in practice, how the driver crosses the GB border

GVMS and the GMR number decide whether the driver boards the ferry and crosses the border. How it works step by step and why documents must be ready early.

GVMS is the UK goods vehicle movement service at the border, which produces a GMR number linking the customs declarations for one trip. Without a GMR the driver usually cannot board the ferry or cross the GB border. At OTSL we prepare the GMR as the carrier, based on import documents supplied by the client.

How it works step by step

  • Customs declarations for the movement are made on both sides.
  • A GMR is created in GVMS, tying those declarations together.
  • The driver presents the GMR at boarding and at the border.
  • The system routes the vehicle to travel or to a check.
GMR (Goods Movement Reference) is the movement number in the GVMS system. One GMR covers all shipments on a trip and is checked at the crossing and at the border.

Why documents must be ready early

A GMR cannot be created without complete declarations and GB import documents. If something is missing, the driver gets stuck before the crossing, and the ferry slot will not wait. That is why we settle the documents in advance and do not release the truck until the GMR is ready. The carrier prepares the GMR but needs the documents from the sender or client.

How we work

We have our own customs agencies in Poland and the UK, so declarations, the GMR and the crossing are one process for us, run by one responsible contact. We mostly use the Dunkirk-Dover crossing and plan it so the border does not eat the planned time. We treat the client goods as our own.
