Transport to Lithuania is one of the shortest routes in road forwarding from Poland. Lithuania is in the European Union, so carriage runs with no customs clearance and no border deposit. The truck usually travels the Via Baltica corridor through Suwalki, and OTSL runs the load, FTL or LTL groupage, with one forwarder from pickup to unloading. Below we explain the routes, the choice between a full truck and part loads, driving bans and what we organise on our side.

Via Baltica is the main road corridor linking Poland with the Baltic states. It runs from the Warsaw area through Bialystok and Suwalki to the Lithuanian border near Budzisko, then on to Kaunas and Vilnius. It is the shortest overland route from Poland to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, which is why most Baltic freight travels this way.

Lithuania is an EU market, with no customs clearance

Lithuania is in the European Union and the Schengen area, so Union goods travel to Lithuania with no customs declaration, no duty and no import VAT. There is no border stop for clearance, no carnet and no customs guarantee. In practice what matters is a correct CMR consignment note and cargo that matches the invoice and packing list, not a customs procedure.

Clearance only comes back into play in two situations. The first is goods from outside the EU that are entering the Union customs territory, for example a load from Kaliningrad or transit from a non-EU country. The second is goods under special supervision, such as excise or ADR, where documentation is required regardless of the border. In both cases we run the matter through our own customs agency, so the formalities move in parallel with the transport.

The Via Baltica corridor and routes from Poland

Loads to Lithuania most often travel the Via Baltica corridor through Suwalki and the crossing near Budzisko, because it is the shortest overland route from central Poland. The Suwalki Gap, the narrow strip of land between the Kaliningrad region and Belarus, is the only land link between the Baltic states and the rest of the Union, so all road traffic to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia passes this way.

  • Toward Kaunas and Vilnius. The main axis of transport, from Suwalki straight to Kaunas, then on to Vilnius or north toward Panevezys and Siauliai.
  • Toward Klaipeda. We link the Baltic port with road transport when cargo continues by sea or arrives from a terminal for inland Lithuania.
  • Transit to Latvia and Estonia. Lithuania is a gateway to the other Baltic states, so a delivery to Vilnius connects easily with onward logistics to Riga and Tallinn.

Transit time depends on the relation, the type of cargo and the delivery windows at the consignee. The nearby border means the truck sets off quickly and usually keeps a short, predictable delivery time. The forwarder confirms the exact date at quotation, since it depends on the loading point in Poland and the unloading point in Lithuania.

FTL or LTL groupage to Lithuania

The choice between a full truck and part loads drives both cost and time. We match the option to the volume and the urgency, not the other way round.

CriterionFTL, full truckLTL, groupage
VolumeFull trailer or close to itFrom a single pallet to part of the space
Delivery timeDirect, with no transshipmentLonger, with consolidation on the route
CostPer whole truckPer space used, cheaper for small volumes
Handling riskMinimal, the load is not reloadedHigher, the cargo travels next to other pallets

We take FTL when you need the whole trailer or when the goods are sensitive and should not be reloaded. We consolidate LTL groupage on the same Baltic direction, so a single pallet does not pay for empty space in the truck. On regular relations we agree terms for the whole flow of shipments, not for a single truck.

Driving bans and planning delivery windows

The route to Lithuania is subject to European HGV driving bans, in Poland on summer weekends and holidays, in Lithuania on selected Sundays and public holidays. A badly timed arrival at the border or at the ramp on a ban day is a lost day, even though the truck stands tens of kilometres from its destination. That is why we plan delivery windows and bookings ahead, with a buffer for the bans, not on the day of departure.

What loads we carry to Lithuania

  • FTL, full truckloads. Curtainsiders and sets on regular export and import relations.
  • LTL, groupage. Part loads from a single pallet, consolidated on the Baltic direction.
  • ADR. Dangerous goods with full documentation and trained drivers.
  • Reefer. Temperature-controlled loads, with a temperature log on request.
  • Oversized. Machinery and structures, with permits where required.

What OTSL organises on the Lithuanian direction

One forwarder handles the load from pickup to unloading, so you have a single point of contact for the whole run and always know where the truck is. We match the fleet to each shipment, plan the route around driving bans and the consignee booking, and for imports from the east or non-EU goods we run clearance through our own customs agency. We handle import from Lithuania to Poland and on to the EU with the same process as export, so companies trading both ways have one process and one contact.

How to start an order to Lithuania

For a quote we need a description of the goods, dimensions, weight, the loading and delivery points and whether you need a full truck or groupage. On that basis the forwarder proposes a transport option and confirms a realistic delivery date. You send the enquiry through the contact form, and one account owner takes it from there.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly can you arrange transport to Lithuania?
Lithuania is a close Baltic destination with a short overland transit from Poland, so the dates are flexible, also for orders placed at short notice. The exact date of the truck arrival is confirmed by the forwarder at quotation, depending on the loading place and the type of cargo.
Do you handle the port of Klaipėda?
Yes. We connect the port of Klaipėda with onward logistics: we collect goods from the port and deliver them to Poland or to other parts of Europe, and for exports we provide a truck for the agreed date. The proximity of the border also allows flexible scheduling.
Does carriage to Lithuania require customs clearance?
No. Lithuania belongs to the European Union, so the goods travel within the single market, without customs clearance. We handle FTL (full truckload) and LTL (part load), ADR (dangerous goods transport) transports, refrigerated shipments and oversized cargo, most often to Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai and Panevėžys.
Do you take single pallets to Lithuania?
Yes. Lithuania is one of the fastest lanes in our network because the truck crosses the border on the day it leaves. We carry groupage from a single pallet as LTL and combine it quickly with other freight, and the nearby border gives flexible dates. We link the Klaipeda port with onward logistics. We also run FTL, reefer and ADR.
